The Netherlands is Known for Bicycles, Clogs, Windmills, Cheese, and OWNING THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC!

When a country who arguably produces the best baseball players in the world (Jose Reyes, Albert Pujols, David Ortiz, Miguel Tejada, Alfonso Soriano, Vladimir Guerrero, Manny Ramirez, and Hanley Ramirez) losses TWICE to a team from a country where Field Hockey and Volleyball are more popular than Baseball I guess you can consider it an upset. That's exactly what happened yesterday, as the Netherlands once again defeated the Dominican Republic 2-1 in 11 innings. Just a few days before, the Netherlands had beaten the Dominican Republic 3-2 in what was a real shocker. At least now the Netherlands can add OWNING THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC to their list of things they are known for on Wikipedia. Here are some more things the Netherlands is known for.

The Netherlands is Known For....
Bicycles - There are twice as many bicycles on the road as cars (80% of the population owns a bicycle).
Windmills - At one time there were 10,000 windmills in the Netherlands (not wind turbines).
Cheese - The Netherlands are the #1 exporter of cheese. The Dutch are the original "cheese heads."
Clogs - Wooden Shoes
Social Tolerance - The culture is very accepting of drug use, prostitution, homosexuality, and euthanasia.

Sports in the Netherlands
Most Popular Team Sports: Football (Soccer), Field Hockey, and Volleyball
Most Popular Individual Sports: Tennis, Gymnastics, and Golf
Best Known Sports Figure: Pim Mulier- founded 1st rugby and football (soccer) club.
Most Famous Baseball Players: Andruw Jones and Jair Jurrjens, both are from Curacao which is part of the Netherlands Antilles and not the mainland.
Baseball: 4th most popular team sport. Of the 15 million people in the Netherlands, only 24,000 play organized baseball.

That was incredible to see. I think it is almost like a 15 or 16 seed beating a 2 or a 1 TWICE!! Unreal.

I didn't see the first game at all but I did see the end of last nights game on MLB TV. I watched from the 9th inning on and it was great! I love a good upset.

I agree that it is equal to a 15 or 16 seed beating a 1 or 2 seed in the NCAA's. And you know it's embarrassing to these Dominican players who always have so much pride.

Here is a rough translation of the above comment:

To the best players of Rep. Dom. was prohibited them to play. The insurers did not want to assure them. The MLB did not allow them to practise together and they extracted to Alex Rodriguez the matter of the steroids and the supposed operation. Now EUA can sleep calmly without the FEAR of a country that they they all know, win or lose he is the players' biggest producer stars in the Big Leagues.

They are also known for putting crazy restrictions on sports betting, which gives much of the profits back to the state. Check out
