As I was watching the Big East Tournament, I got to thinking about some of the best performances in Big East Tournament history and I instantly thought of Gerry McNamara. I'm not sure there was a player who was more important to a team then he was to Syracuse. So today's installment of Where Are They Now? features former Syracuse star Gerry McNamara. McNamara played four years at Syracuse where he started all 135 games he played in. He left the schools 4th on their all-time list in points with 2,099, 1st in minutes played with 4,781, 2nd in steals with 258, 3rd in assists with 648, 1st in 3-pointers made with 400, 1st in 3-pointers attempted with 1,131, and 1st in free throw percentage at 89.1%.
He was not drafted in 2006, but did playing in the Summer League with the Orlando Magic, but was not signed to a contract. Instead, he signed with Greek powerhouse Olympiacos BC, but only for the 2006-2007 Euroleague games. He only played one minute before reaching a contract settlement and leaving the team.
In December of 2006 he signed with the Baskersfield Jam of the NBDL where he played the rest of the season averaging 10.8 points and 5.2 assists per game, and was named to the NBDL West all-star team. In 2007 he played with the 76ers in the Summer League but once again he was not signed. In August of 2007 he signed a $400,000 contract with the Greek team Panionios BC. He was released after only 4 games and scoring 7 points.
In February of 2008 he signed with the Latvian team BK Ventspils where he played for a short time before returning to the U.S. to try out for the Utah Jazz. He was waived by the Jazz in October of 2008 and he then signed with the Reno Bighorns of the NBDL in January of 2009. In 17 games with Reno he averaged 7.1 points and 3.6 assists per game. While he is not currently listed on their roster, he played with the team as recently as March 1st.
In case you were wonder, McNamara married his high school sweetheart Katie Marie Stott on July 21st of 2007 and enjoyed their honeymoon in Maui. He also enjoys fishing as much as basketball.

For an update, he was in attendace at last night's UCONN vs Syracuse Big East Tournament game at MSG.
Gotta root for Gerry, since he didn't leave school early like some of these others.
