1929 - The American League announced it will discontinue the awarding of the MVP trophy; the award was brought back in 1931 after revamping the voting process.
1931 - Baseball Hall of Famer Willie Mays was born.
1934 - The Boston Red Sox set a record by hitting four consecutive triples.
1953 - St. Louis Browns pitcher Bobo Holloman throws a no-hitter in his first career start making him only the second pitcher to ever do so (the other was Bumpus Jones of the Cincinnati Reds in 1892); this was Holloman's only season in professional baseball.
1974 - The smallest attendance at Philadelphia's Veteran's Stadium (4,149).
1982 - Seattle Mariner pitcher Gaylord Perry becomes the 15th pitcher to record 300 wins as he defeated the New York Yankees.
1985 - NBA All-Star Chris Paul was born.
1992 - New York Met pitcher Anthony Young begins his streak of losing 26 consecutive decisions; the streak lasted until July 24th 1993 and is the longest in baseball history.
1995 - The Classic Sports Network makes its debut on cable television.
1997 - The NHL's Hartford Whalers become the Carolina Hurricanes.
1998 - Kerry Wood strikes out 20 batters tying the Major League record set by Roger Clemens; it was only his 5th career start.

I appreciate the feedback, but I'm afraid "this day in sports history" is here to stay. I've had a good amount of positive feedback about that daily post so it wouldn't be in the best interest of my site to discontinue it. I'll try to mix in more posts about other news in the future.
