1906 - Philadelphia A's pitcher Chief Bender plays the outfield and hits two homeruns.
1926 - A fire breaks out at Fenway Park destroying the bleachers along the left field line.
1934 - Heavyweight boxing champion Sonny Liston was born.
1936 - Jockey Ralph Neves was declared dead after falling off his horse during a race in California; after receiving a shot of adrenaline at the mortuary he woke up and demanded to be brought back to the race track. Neves did not officially die until 1995 at the age of 79.
1947 - St. Louis Cardinals players plan to protest its 1st meeting against Jackie Robinson and the Dodgers; owner Sam Breadon talks the team into playing.
1957 - Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher was born.
1959 - NFL Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott was born.
1966 - Frank Robinson hits the only homerun out of Baltimore's Memorial Park.
1967 - Muhammad Ali is indicted for refusing induction into the U.S. Army.
1968 - Jim "Catfish" Hunter throws a perfect game against the Twins.
1973 - Ernie Banks fills in as manager of the Chicago Cubs for Whitey Lockman who was ejected during the game, thus technically making Banks the first African American manager.
1984 - Kirby Puckett makes his Major League debut with 4 singles.
1988 - Amateur referees work the New Jersey Devil/Boston Bruins playoff game as NHL referees walk off due to a restraining order brought by the Devils.
