1892 - Baltimore Orioles catcher Wilbert Robinson sets a record by going 7-for-7 in a 9-inning game; the record still holds today and has only been equalled by Pirates second baseman Rennie Stennett in 1975.
1921 - Babe Ruth becomes the all-time leader in home runs with 120 passing Gavvy Cravath.
1944 - At age 15, Joe Nuxhall becomes the youngest player ever in the Major Leagues; this was due mostly because of player shortages due to WWII.
1946 - Jack Johnson, the first black heavyweight champion, dies in a car accident at age 68.
1951 - Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Fouts was born.
1952 - The St. Louis Browns fire legendary manager Rogers Hornsby.
1968 - Baseball games in Baltimore and Chicago are postponed in honor of Robert Kennedy.
1975 - During Army Day at Shea Stadium, the 21-gun salute blows away part of the outfield fence and another part is set on fire; the game was only delayed.
1981 - Pete Rose ties Stan Musial's National League record of 3,630 hits.
