1909 - Jim Thorpe makes his pro baseball debut for Rocky Mount of the East Coast League winning 4-2; this will cause him to forfeit his Olympic medals.
1916 - Basketball Hall of Famer Hank Luisetti was born; he is best known for being the first player to use the one-handed shot.
1938 - Jimmie Foxx walks a record six consecutive times.
1957 - Chicago White Sox relief pitcher Dixie Howell hits two home runs to beat the Washington Senators 8-6.
1970 - Former Chicago Bears running back Brian Piccolo dies from embryonal cell carcinoma at the age of 26.
1970 - Golfer Phil Mickelson is born.
1975 - The Milwaukee Bucks trade Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to the Lakers.
1989 - 4 holes-in-one are made all on the 6th hole of the U.S. Open; only 17 holes-in-one have occurred during U.S. Opens.
1992 - Jeff King becomes the 5th player to be thrown out trying to steal twice in the same inning.
1995 - Florida Marlins outfielder Andre Dawson hits his 400th career home run.
1996 - NY Yankees sportscaster Mel Allen dies at age 83.
