1902 - John McGraw becomes manager of the NY Giants, he would hold this position for 30 years.
1903 - Baseball Hall of Famer Ed Delahanty disappears, he is found dead a few days later after falling over Niagara Falls at age 35.
1921 - Jack Dempsey KO's George Carpentier in 4 rounds for the heavyweight boxing title; this was the first million dollar boxing match (gate was $1.7 million).
1933 - New York Giants pitcher Carl Hubbell shuts out the Cardinals 1-0 in 18 innings without walking a batter.
1935 - Great Britain beats the United States in the first international Golden Gloves competition.
1963 - Giants pitcher Juan Marichal beats Braves pitcher Warren Spahn 1-0 in 16 innings thanks to a Willie Mays home run.
1978 - Ron Guidry sets a Yankees record by starting the season 13-0.
1993 - Baseball Hall of Famer Don Drysdale dies of a heart attack at age 56.
1994 - Colombian soccer star Andres Escobar is shot dead at age 27 by his bodyguard because he scored an own goal during a World Cup match.
