1867 - Hall of Fame first baseman Jake Beckley was born.
1909 - AL umpire Tim Hurst instigates a riot by spitting at Philadelphia A's 2nd baseman Eddie Collins who questioned his call, this action would lead to Hurst's banishment from baseball.
1910 - Philadelphia A's pitcher Jack Coombs and Chicago White Sox pitcher Ed Walsh pitch to a 16-inning scoreless tie.
1922 - Female first baseman Lizzie Murphy becomes the first woman to play for a Major League team in an exhibition game, when the Boston Red Sox choose her to play in an exhibition all-star game.
1929 - The Cleveland Indians score 9 runs with 2 outs in the 9th inning to beat the Yankees 14-6.
1945 - Golfer Byron Nelson records the most tournament wins (18) in a season.
1947 - Hall of Fame hockey goalie Ken Dryden was born.
1969 - Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Willie Stargell becomes the first player to hit a home run out of Dodger Stadium.
1983 - While warming up in between innings, Yankees outfielder Dave Winfield accidentally kills a seagull.
1985 - Angels infielder Rod Carew becomes the 16th player to record 3,000 hits, on the same day Chicago White Sox pitcher Tom Seaver records his 300th career win.
2008 - British motorcycle racer Craig Jones dies at the age of 23 as a result of injuries suffered during a race.
