1927 - Phiilies outfielder Cy Williams hits for the cycle in just 4 at bats.
1954 - The Boxing Hall of Fame inducts it's inaugural class of 24 modern boxers and 15 pioneers.
1959 - The Chicago Cardinals of the NFL beat the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL 55-26 in an exhibition game.
1960 - The Detroit Tigers trade Manager Jimmy Dykes to the Cleveland Indians for Manager Joe Gordon; first time teams trade managers with no player involved.
1962 - Basketball Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing was born.
1967 - The first time an AFL team beats an NFL team; Broncos defeat the Lions 13-7.
1985 - Major League baseball players go on strike for 2 days.
1986 - Steve Carlton becomes the 2nd pitcher to reach 4,000 strikeouts.
1991 - Paul Brown, Hall of Fame coach and one of the founders of the NFL dies at age 82.
2002 - Los Angeles Lakers long time play-by-play announcer Chick Hearn dies.
